Weeding and Attitude

Ah, spring!
The birds are on the wing.
The deer are in fawn.
The weeds are in the lawn.

Here we are in the one of the most beautiful seasons of the year, when nature rises from its sleep, and all growing things go through a rebirth.

It would be fine if we could leave nature alone, but we feel we have to “improve” on the natural process. And I’m talking now about weeding lawns.

When we live in a “developed” society of orderly homes and streets, the orderly green areas around our property have no place for the disorderly weed.

I’m an orderly person, and I like to see only flowing green waves on my lawn, similar to the ones in the Scott’s lawn products commercials.

But the gap between what I like to see and what I do see is wide.

I have learned there is no quick fix for eliminating weeds. I can spend a fortune on constant chemical applications, but in this economy, I don’t have that money.

I read up on weed killers made at home from common products, and applied vinegar, bleach and salt (in very small doses since salt sterilizes the soil). The weeds came back.

The only way to kill weeds completely is to kill the root. Boiling water seemed to do the trick, but running inside to heat pots of water to pour on the weeds was not that much fun.

Then, there is the issue of killing everything around the weed just to get that single weed. I need a surgical procedure.

We have an inexpensive steamer used to generate high-pressure steam to un-wrinkle clothes and steam-clean fabrics, etc. I have used it to remove wrinkled window tinting on my car.

The steamer also works great in killing weeds, one at a time or in small groups. It is boiling water applied surgically. It also moistens the ground to make pulling the entire weed easier.

Don’t get me wrong. There are plenty of weeds still out there. I spend 45-60 minutes on my knees every morning (and sometimes every evening). You’ll know me as the crazy person with the steamer and the long extension cord, steaming weeds, pulling them out by the root and filling a 5-gallon bucket with them.

But here’s the point. I have learned there is no quick fix for eliminating weeds. I spend my time humbly, on my knees, but in peace, enjoying the outdoors and fresh air. And day-by-day the unbroken grass area grows. I can see the progress and feel the accomplishment and satisfaction of leaving the earth (or just my neighborhood) a better place.

I think a lot as I pull the weeds. Pulling weeds has parallels in life. The expanse of weeds represents the big problems we encounter. They are just there. We can either work to fix them, or ignore them.

Ignoring them will allow the problem to get worse. But they can’t be blasted away either, unless you’re willing to destroy the surrounding good grass.

Sometimes, we just have to get humbly down on our knees and work to eliminate one tiny issue at a time. My position on the ground with the weeds has helped me see a bigger vista. In this case, my body attitude has improved my mind attitude.

If we keep at improving one little thing at a time, we will see the overall progress grow from our efforts. We will feel the accomplishment and satisfaction of leaving the earth (or just our own little world) a better place.

And there’s nothing wrong with asking for a little help.

Think about it.

Command a vital life. Live free.
